Pineapple (Ananas comosus) is a tropical fruit native to South America that is cultivated widely across Hawaii, the Philippines, Costa Rica, and Thailand. Its signature flavor, bright, acidic, and intensely sweet, comes from a combination of natural sugars and citric and malic acids. Our sweetened dried pineapple contains added cane sugar, which deepens the sweetness and helps achieve that chewy, slightly sticky texture characteristic of quality dried pineapple. Pineapple contains bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme that has drawn scientific interest for its potential role in protein digestion.

Whether you’re buying rings or cubes, our sweetened pineapple products offer the same quality fruit from the same allergen-free facility. For a no-sugar option, see our Dried Pineapple Chunks with No Sugar Added.

Dried pineapple rings and cubes are fresh pineapple (Ananas comosus) that has been dehydrated until shelf-stable, concentrating the fruit’s natural sweetness, acidity, and bromelain enzyme content. Pineapple is a tropical plant native to South America, likely originating in the region between southern Brazil and Paraguay, and was spread globally by European explorers beginning in the late 15th century. Today, Costa Rica, the Philippines, and Brazil are among the top producing countries. Our sweetened dried pineapple contains added cane sugar, which enhances the fruit’s natural sweetness and contributes to the characteristic chewy texture. Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapple, has been the subject of scientific study for its potential role in protein digestion.

Key Health Benefits of Dried Pineapple

Bromelain: Proteolytic Enzyme

Pineapple is the primary dietary source of bromelain, a complex of proteolytic (protein-digesting) enzymes found in both the fruit and stem of the pineapple plant. Bromelain has been studied for its potential role in protein digestion. Some enzymatic activity persists in dried pineapple, though concentrations are lower than in fresh or juiced fruit.

Vitamin C

Fresh pineapple is an excellent source of vitamin C, USDA FoodData Central reports approximately 47.8 mg per 100g. The drying process causes some loss, but dried pineapple contributes meaningfully to daily vitamin C intake. Vitamin C supports immune function, collagen synthesis, and antioxidant protection.

Manganese

Pineapple is one of the most concentrated common food sources of manganese, USDA FoodData Central reports approximately 0.927 mg per 100g of fresh pineapple, providing roughly 40% of the daily adequate intake. Manganese is essential for bone formation, carbohydrate metabolism, and serves as a cofactor for superoxide dismutase (antioxidant enzyme).

Natural and Added Energy

Sweetened dried pineapple provides readily available carbohydrate energy from both natural fruit sugars and added cane sugar, making it a practical portable snack and high-energy recipe ingredient.

Dietary Fiber

Dried pineapple provides approximately 1-2g of dietary fiber per ounce, contributing to digestive health and the recommended daily intake of 25-38g. As with all foods, individual results may vary. Gerbs makes no medical claims.

Flavor & Texture Profile

Sweetened dried pineapple has one of the most vivid tropical flavor profiles of any dried fruit, bright, acidic, intensely sweet, and unmistakably pineapple. The cane sugar amplifies the natural sweetness while the pineapple’s natural acidity keeps the flavor lively. The texture is pleasantly chewy with a slight stickiness. The acid-sweet balance makes dried pineapple a natural partner for both sweet and savory applications.

Ingredients

Pineapple, Cane Sugar, Citric Acid.

How to Use Dried Pineapple

Straight Snacking

Sweetened dried pineapple rings and cubes are vivid, flavorful snacks with that bright, acidic pineapple character that few other dried fruits can match. The sweet-tart balance makes them genuinely enjoyable to eat in quantity and they satisfy a tropical fruit craving year-round regardless of fresh pineapple availability or season.

Baking

Chop dried pineapple and fold into hummingbird cake, carrot cake, pineapple upside-down cake variations, or tropical muffins and quick breads. The dried form contributes concentrated pineapple flavor without releasing the water that fresh pineapple can contribute, which can affect batter consistency in some recipes.

Tropical Salsa

Finely chop dried pineapple and combine with fresh lime juice, red onion, jalapeño, and cilantro for a tropical salsa that works year-round. The sweetness and acidity of the dried pineapple provide the salsa’s backbone alongside the heat of the pepper. Serve with grilled proteins or alongside plantain chips for an allergen-free appetizer.

Smoothies

Soak dried pineapple in water or coconut water for 10-15 minutes before adding to a blender. The concentrated sugars provide natural sweetness and the bromelain enzyme adds a functional ingredient dimension to tropical smoothies. Blend with mango, coconut milk, and banana for a complete tropical smoothie.

Trail Mix

Pineapple pieces are a popular trail mix component, their bright acidity prevents trail mix from tasting monotonously sweet and provides a refreshing contrast to richer, heavier components like banana chips and dates. Combine with dried mango, dried cranberries, and sunflower seeds.

Storage Recommendations

Store Gerbs Sweetened Dried Pineapple in a cool, dry place in an airtight container. Unopened, it keeps for up to 12 months. After opening, consume within 3 months for best flavor and texture. Pineapple’s natural acids can affect the flavor of surrounding foods in a mixed storage container, keep in a dedicated container. In humid climates, refrigeration after opening is recommended. Large format bags should be subdivided after opening.

FAQ

Yes. Our facility has never processed tree nuts of any kind. Gerbs Dried Pineapple Rings and Cubes are produced exclusively in our dedicated allergen-free facility in Johnston, Rhode Island with no co-packers and no shared equipment with allergen-containing products.

Are Gerbs Dried Pineapple products gluten-free?

Do Gerbs Dried Pineapple products contain added sugar?

Yes. Our sweetened dried pineapple products contain added cane sugar. For a no-sugar option, see our Dried Pineapple Chunks with No Sugar Added.

What is the difference between rings and cubes?

Both are sweetened dried pineapple made from the same quality fruit. Rings are full cross-sections of pineapple in a circular format, visually striking and satisfying as a direct snack. Cubes are diced into small, uniform pieces, better suited to granola, trail mixes, and baking applications where consistent sizing and even distribution matter. Both products are allergen-free and have the same ingredients.

Does dried pineapple still contain bromelain?

Yes, trace amounts of bromelain activity persist in dried pineapple, though the heat and drying process reduces enzymatic activity compared to fresh or juiced pineapple. Dried pineapple is not a therapeutic bromelain source, but contributes the enzyme’s presence alongside its nutritional profile. As with all foods, individual results may vary.

Another favorite in my family – these were sweet and slightly tangy. My kids (allergic to peanuts, tree-nuts, wheat & gluten, eggs, milk, and sesame) thought they were candy! We’ve sprinkled them in (coconut milk) yogurt and eaten them straight out of the bag. We’ve also made our own trail mix (incorporating Gerbs banana chips and raisins as well.)

Delicious, reasonably priced, shipped fast and arrived on time. Yum! And nothing beats the smiles on my kids faces – they haven’t been able to eat these things in a long time (or at all!)

I have ordered the Pineapple cubes a couple of times and love them. My husband has discovered them and I have had to order more. My little princess pup begs every time she sees me with the container! Needless to say, they are a big hit in our house. We snack on them, use them in trail mix, I toss them in my salads, hubby snacks on them at work, we are still finding ways to eat these wonderous cubes!! They are gems to me as I have so many allergies and they are healthy enough that even my dog can munch on a few here and there! Best snacks ever! No need to worry about the contents because they are all natural and so delicious!!
