Banana chips are made from sliced bananas that are dried or lightly fried, then tossed with a small amount of cane sugar and coconut oil to give them that characteristic crunch and a touch of extra sweetness. Bananas (Musa acuminata) are one of the world’s most widely consumed fruits, prized for their natural potassium content, readily available carbohydrate energy, and pleasant flavor. In dried chip form, those attributes concentrate, you get a satisfying crunch with a naturally sweet, tropical taste that works as a standalone snack or as a mix-in for granola, trail mix, and baked goods.
We acknowledge that our sweetened banana chips contain added cane sugar and coconut oil. If you’re looking for a chip without any additions, see our Unsweetened Banana Chips. Either way, you can order with complete confidence knowing these chips never shared a room with your allergens.

What Are Banana Chips?
Banana chips are sliced sections of banana (Musa acuminata) that have been dried or lightly fried until crisp. Unlike fresh bananas, which are soft and perishable, banana chips are shelf-stable and crunchy, a portable form of the fruit’s natural energy and sweetness. Sweetened banana chips typically include a small amount of cane sugar and coconut oil, which enhances the crunch and deepens the sweetness. Bananas are classified botanically as berries and are one of the most widely produced agricultural crops on Earth, cultivated in over 130 countries. The Cavendish variety accounts for approximately 47% of global banana production and is the variety most commonly used for chips.
Key Health Benefits of Banana Chips
Potassium for Electrolyte Balance
Bananas are one of the most recognized dietary sources of potassium, and the dried chip form retains this mineral in a concentrated dose. According to USDA FoodData Central, dried banana chips provide approximately 152 mg of potassium per 1 oz (28g) serving. Potassium plays a central role in maintaining fluid balance, supporting normal muscle function, and regulating blood pressure. The National Institutes of Health notes that adequate potassium intake is associated with reduced risk of hypertension and stroke in adults.
Vitamin B6 for Energy Metabolism
Banana chips are a meaningful source of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), providing approximately 0.12 mg per ounce, roughly 7% of the Daily Value. Vitamin B6 is essential for amino acid metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis (including serotonin and dopamine), and the conversion of stored glycogen to glucose for energy. It also supports normal immune function. The USDA FoodData Central database identifies bananas as one of the more concentrated common food sources of B6 relative to calorie density.
Magnesium for Muscle and Nerve Function
Banana chips supply approximately 20 mg of magnesium per ounce serving. Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, including those governing protein synthesis, muscle contraction, nerve transmission, and blood glucose regulation. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements notes that many Americans do not meet the recommended intake for magnesium, making food sources meaningful contributors.
Readily Available Carbohydrate Energy
Banana chips are an energy-dense snack, providing approximately 147 calories and 17g of carbohydrates per ounce. The carbohydrates in banana chips are primarily natural fruit sugars and starch, forms of energy that digest relatively quickly and are available to working muscles. This makes banana chips a practical pre-workout or trail snack for those needing fast, portable energy.
Natural Dietary Fiber
A 1 oz serving of banana chips provides approximately 2g of dietary fiber, contributing to the recommended 25-38g daily intake. Dietary fiber supports digestive health by adding bulk to stool, promoting regularity, and feeding beneficial gut bacteria. The Mayo Clinic notes that adequate fiber intake is associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes over time. As with all foods, individual results may vary. Gerbs makes no medical claims.

Flavor & Texture Profile
Sweetened banana chips are crisp and crunchy with a firm snap. The flavor is distinctly banana, ripe, tropical, and mildly sweet, with the added cane sugar and coconut oil deepening the sweetness and adding a hint of richness. The coconut oil contributes a subtle nuttiness that complements the fruit. These chips hold their crunch well in trail mixes and granola, making them a reliable textural element in mixed snacks.
Ingredients
Banana, Coconut Oil, Cane Sugar.
How to Use Banana Chips
Straight Snacking
Sweetened banana chips are a complete snack on their own, crunchy, portable, and satisfying with no preparation required. A 1 oz serving delivers a meaningful amount of potassium and natural energy. They travel well in lunchboxes, gym bags, and hiking packs without the perishability of fresh fruit. The sturdy crunch holds up better than most dried fruits at room temperature.
Granola and Breakfast Bowls
Banana chips are one of the most popular granola add-ins because they maintain their crunch even after being mixed with oats and baked. Stir them into homemade granola before or after baking, or add them to pre-made granola just before serving to keep the crunch intact. They pair particularly well with coconut flakes, dried mango, and pineapple in tropical-theme granolas.
Trail Mix
Banana chips are a trail mix staple for good reason, they are energy-dense, crunch-stable, and flavorful in a mix without requiring refrigeration. Combine with raisins, dried cranberries, and sunflower seeds for a balanced, allergen-free trail mix that works for school, camp, or outdoor activities.
Smoothie Bowl Topping
Add banana chips as a crunchy topping to acai bowls, smoothie bowls, and yogurt parfaits. Their crunch contrasts with the soft base, and their banana flavor integrates naturally with tropical smoothie base ingredients. Add them just before serving to preserve the crunch.
Baking
Crush banana chips and use as a crust ingredient for bars and cheesecakes, or fold whole chips into muffin or quick bread batter for texture and flavor. They add a tropical note to banana bread when used alongside fresh banana, and hold their shape reasonably well through most baking temperatures.
Storage Recommendations
Store Gerbs Sweetened Banana Chips in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. An unopened bag will stay fresh for up to 12 months from the production date. After opening, transfer to an airtight container or reseal the original bag tightly. Opened banana chips are best consumed within 2-3 months for peak crunch and flavor. Avoid storing near the stove, above the refrigerator (warm area), or in direct sunlight, which can accelerate oil oxidation. Refrigeration is not required but is acceptable in humid climates where condensation can be controlled.

If I had ten thumbs, I’d give these banana chips ten thumbs up!
This is one of those products that is nearly impossible to purchase in a grocery store – most banana chips (and other similar trail-mix type products) are produced in facilities with (or on the same manufacturing lines) as one or more of the top-8 allergens (often peanuts), which means that they aren’t safe for individuals who need to avoid those allergens.
Banana chips are a personal favorite of mine. Ordering again, for sure!
Matt (verified owner) –
Great chips and top allergen free! Our son with allergies now knows how amazingly delicious banana chips are! These are great even if you don’t have allergies.
