Introducing Gerbs Roasted Unsalted Sunflower Seed Kernels

These United States grown and cultivated Sunflower seed kernels are a nutrient-dense food offering various health benefits, including improved heart health, reduced inflammation, and support for the immune system. They are packed with healthy fats, protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. This current batch of sunflower kernels have been carefully selected by the buyers at Gerbs each growing season, and packaged on dedicated food allergen free equipment by Gerbs and the Conte family in their world headquarters in Johnston Rhode Island since 2003.

Sunflower Kernels have been carefully hulled from their hard outer shell, so you can simply enjoy the meaty inside. Sunflower seed kernels offer a mild, earthy, and distinctly nutty flavor, often with subtle sweet or fruity undertones, and a satisfying crunchy texture that becomes tender when chewed, much like a cashew; roasting intensifies the nuttiness and adds complex caramel notes, while salt brings out savory depth.

Flavor Profile:

  • Nutty: The primary flavor note, akin to almonds or hazelnuts, but milder.
  • Subtly Sweet: A slight natural sweetness, which deepens with roasting into caramel-like notes.
  • Earthy/Fruity: Hints of earthy undertones and sometimes a subtle fruity quality.
  • Savory (when salted): Salting enhances their inherent savory aspects.

Texture Profile:

  • Raw: Firm but tender, smooth, and easily crushable.
  • Roasted: Develops a satisfying, crisp crunch that’s addictive.

Nutritional Highlights

A 1-ounce (about 1/4 cup) serving of shelled, dry-roasted sunflower seeds provides a rich source of essential nutrients:

  • Vitamins: An excellent source of Vitamin E (an antioxidant that protects cells from damage), and several B vitamins, including thiamin (B1), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), and B6.
  • Minerals: High in selenium, copper, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc, all of which play crucial roles in bodily functions.
  • Fats: Primarily composed of heart-healthy polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats (linoleic and oleic acids), which help manage cholesterol levels.
  • Fiber and Protein: A good source of plant-based protein and dietary fiber, which aids digestion and promotes a feeling of fullness (satiety).

Key Nutritional Benefits Gerbs Sunflower Seeds

  • Promotes Heart Health: The healthy fats, fiber, magnesium, and plant sterols (phytosterols) in sunflower seeds can help lower “bad” (LDL) cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and manage blood pressure, reducing the risk of heart disease.
  • Reduces Inflammation: The high levels of Vitamin E, flavonoids, and other plant compounds provide potent anti-inflammatory effects that can help lower markers for chronic diseases like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
  • Supports Immune Function: Minerals like zinc and selenium, along with Vitamin E, help enhance the body’s natural defenses against viruses and bacteria.
  • Helps Manage Blood Sugar: Studies suggest that regular consumption of sunflower seeds may help lower fasting blood sugar due to their protein, fat, and fiber content, which slows digestion and the release of sugar from carbohydrates.
  • Boosts Energy and Brain Function: B vitamins, particularly thiamin, help convert food into energy, while magnesium supports nerve function and brain health, potentially improving mood and memory.
  • Supports Bone Health: Key minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, and copper contribute to maintaining bone mineral density and strength.

How to properly store Gerbs products for optimum shelf life.

Gerbs Storage Recommendations

For the best flavor and freshness, we recommend storing your Gerbs in an airtight container in a cool, dark place such as a pantry or kitchen cabinet, away from sunlight and heat sources like the oven.

Each time the container is opened, oxygen sneaks in and can speed up rancidity, so try to keep only about ½ to one pound of product accessible at a time.

While Gerbs can be frozen, we don’t recommend it. Freezing and thawing can change the natural cell structure, which may affect texture and taste. Keep them cool, dry, and sealed tight for the best experience!

Gerbs has amazing nut free alternatives for our family member with severe nut allergies. We love to mix sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, dried blueberries, and yogurt drops to make trail mix.

  2. Betsy katz (verified owner)

Very excited to find your website to safely prepare dishes for my grandson who has a tree nut allergy

  3. Emily (verified owner)

We recently found out that a member of our family has a tree nut allergy. We don’t buy any products with tree nuts or made in tree nut facilities. All of the sunflower seeds that I’ve seen have been made in tree nut facilities, so I have not been able to enjoy them for almost a year. Then I found GERBS website, where they sell all types of allergy free foods- including sunflower seeds! They are delicious and I look forward to trying more products from the company soon!
