Five Reasons to Eat Gerbs Plantain Chips

May 4, 2021 by Sennen Conte 1 Comment

Five Reasons to Eat Gerbs Plantain Chips

1. Plantain can help with weight loss

When it comes to losing weight, it is about burning more calories than the calories that one consumes. One simple piece of weight loss advice is just to eat more fiber. Research shows that people who eat more fiber can lose as much weight as people on a low-fat diet. 100g of plantain provides roughly 8 percent of the recommended daily intake of fiber. Fiber has no fat-burning properties. However, it helps with weight loss because high-fiber foods tend to have a lower energy density, which means they provide fewer calories per gram of food. In addition, as a high-fiber food, plantains add bulk to food intake, which makes you feel full and also aids digestion. The feeling of fullness helps with weight and portion control. As a result, a person on a high-fiber diet can consume the same amount of food, but with fewer calories.

2. Plantain is Good for Your Immune System

Vitamin C is found to play a key role in boosting the immune system by increasing the production of white blood cells, and by making the cells of the body impenetrable to viruses. Plantains are an excellent source of Vitamin C with 100g of plantain containing 30 percent of the recommended daily requirement of Vitamin C. Vitamin C is found to play a key role in boosting the immune system by increasing the production of white blood cells, and by making the cells of the body impenetrable to viruses. Vitamin C also acts as an antioxidant, which helps the immune system to neutralise free radicals that may otherwise cause damage at cellular level cellular damage.

3. Plantain is Good for Your Mood and Brain

Plantains contain a healthy dose of Vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 plays a variety of roles in the body including activating enzymes, stimulating metabolism, promoting immune function, helping with hemoglobin formation, and contributing to cognitive development and function. Our moods are dependent on many factors, including the levels of a variety of dietary nutrients. Vitamin B6 is needed to produce numerous brain chemicals including serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and gamma-aminobutyric acid or GABA. These brain chemicals are all related to mood and behavior and an imbalance of any of these chemicals typically results in altered mood. For example, abnormally low levels of serotonin are linked to depression and anxiety disorders, whereas a lack of dopamine is associated with Parkinson’s disease. So want to feel good? Eat some plantain!

4. Plantain Can Be Beneficial Against Diabetes

Plantains are a good source of magnesium. 100g of plantain contains approximately 16 percent of the body’s daily requirement of magnesium. Magnesium is an important mineral because it affects several hundreds of bio-chemical reactions taking place in the body. One of these critical functions is ensuring that our blood sugar remains within the right range. Research has established that there is a connection between having adequate magnesium and diabetes prevention.

Insulin helps regulate the transport of magnesium within the body for use in glucose metabolism. And as part of the metabolism of glucose, magnesium promotes many of the processes involved with the breaking down of glucose in the body. Magnesium deficiency causes the body to require more insulin than normal to metabolize glucose, leading to insulin resistance.

While plantains are a good source of magnesium, they do have a high carbohydrate content and glycemic load. As such, they can raise blood sugar. Therefore, diabetics should take care to pair plantain with other foods with a low glycemic index and glycemic load.

5. Plantain Helps To Maintain a Healthy Digestive Tract

Plantains contain a high amount of dietary fiber which helps ensure healthy bowels and reduces constipation.  The digestive system is lined with muscles that propel the food along the digestive tract from the throat through the bowels until the eventual waste is passed out of the body. Soluble fiber acts like a sponge and soaks up water as the feces passes through the intestines. This helps to bulk up and soften the feces, allowing it to pass through the gut more easily. It also slows down the rate of digestion of food by the body.

Gerbs Double Chocolate Pumpkin Meal Brownies

Allergy Friendly, Low Sugar, Flour Free Fudge Bars

Gerbs Double Chocolate Pumpkin Meal Brownies

Although Paul Revere went with ‘the British are coming, the British are coming’ we think he would have had a 100% turn out had he screamed, THE BROWNIES ARE COMING, THE BROWNIES ARE COMING, THE DOUBLE CHOCOLATE FUDGY BROWNIES ARE COMING!

We also have a massive debate in our family, my oldest son love these Gerbs fudgy brownies warm right out the oven, my youngest son loves melted Gerbs dark chocolate and vanilla ice cream served on top or as he ask ‘daddy make me a safe brownie Sunday’.

Allergy Friendly Flour Free Fudge Bars

Mommy enjoys them cold with a slather of  topped with fresh raspberries or banana slices; where as I love them room temperature crumbled on top of a bowl of thick and creamy Greek banana yogurt, topped with some Gerbs Unsalted Pumpkin Seed Kernels or Gerbs Dried Cherries for texture.

This recipe has been tweaked by many in our family, so if you find a way to make them better or differently please do not think you will hurt our feelings, share here, or send us an email (sales@mygerbs.com). This recipe is not sweet like most brownies, so if that is what you are looking for you may want to think outside the box, but you can always add more sugar, stevia, or maple syrup/honey; you just may have to increase the amount of pumpkin seed meal and cocoa powder, plus the wet ingredients. What we love the best about these fudgy brownies are the fact they are not overly sweet, thus they allow you to add other toppings, like melted dark chocolate chips or ice cream which have plenty of sweetness!

Obviously since all Gerbs products and most recipes we design are free from the Top 8 and often Top 14 food allergies; this recipe has a powerful dark chocolate flavor since milk chocolate is off the table. The power of the dark side is strong with this recipe, so be one with it! Its quite easy to melt some Gerbs jumbo dark chocolate chips in microwave safe bowl and thickened with more Pumpkin Seed Meal for a great, safe hot fudge sauce!

Although we do carry all purpose flour, as well as two lines of rice flours, and several grain flours like buckwheat, sorghum and teff, we wanted to make this recipe showcasing our freshly ground pumpkin seed meal/flour.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Gerbs Dutch Cocoa Powder

Gerbs ‘Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy’ Pumpkin Soup

Gerbs Simple Pumpkin Soup

Although we are experiencing an amazing Indian Summer, the cooler days and chilly nights are right around the corner. Nothing is better than putting on a warm pair of pajamas, cozy slippers and sitting by a fire enjoying a bowl of Gerbs hearty homemade pumpkin soup.

The amazing thing about this soup, is the balance of complex yet subtle flavors while only comprised of a few ingredients. This is truly a soup that can be served on a Sunday afternoon alone on the couch or to a dinner party of 10, its that spectacular!

This time of year is when grocery stores and farm stands are packed with United States grown Sugar Pumpkins. These little beauties ripen & sweeten in the summer sun. They simply have it all, delicious pumpkin meat and whole pumpkin seeds, that roast to perfection (or order Gerbs Whole Pumpkin Seeds).

If you are good with a cleaver or chef knife, cutting up the pumpkin, removing the seeds, and preparing it for roasting is the only part of this recipe that takes any time, after that this amazing soup comes together quickly.

Gerbs Pumpkin Slicing

Fresh pumpkin meat Ingredients:

  • Sliced Sugar Pumpkin Wedges
  • Fresh Vermont Maple syrup
  • Gerbs Himalayan Pink Sea Salt
  • Gerbs Black Pepper
  • Gerbs Pumpkin Pie Seasoning Mix
  • Gerbs Garlic Powder
  • Gerbs Onion Powder

Soup Ingredients

  • 1 Large sugar pumpkin
  • 1 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 2 shallots, finely chopped & diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, knife minced
  • 3 cups organic vegetable stalk
  • 1 cup canned light coconut milk (substitute Oat, Chia, or Sunflower Milk)
  • 2 Tbsp maple syrup
  • Season to taste with Gerbs Salt, Pepper, Pumpkin Pie Spice
  • ¼ cup Gerbs Roasted Pumpkin Seed Kernels

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Using a sharp knife, cut off the tops of the sugar pumpkins and then halve & quarter them. Using the side of a metal spoon or measuring cup, scrape out all of the seeds, sweet pumpkin nectar and strings. These are full of natural sugars, which if you do not fully remove will burn in the oven during the roasting process. (save the seeds to roast later or order some Gerbs pumpkin seeds).

In a large bowl thoroughly toss the pumpkin ‘honeydew’ sized slices with olive oil, maple syrup, vegetable stalk and Gerbs seasonings. Place the pumpkin slices flesh side down, on a sunflower oil greased baking sheet. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until a fork easily pierces the skin. Remove from the oven, let cool for 10 minutes, then peel away skin and set pumpkin aside. At this point, this pumpkin is the ultimate side for Thanksgiving, simply mash with a few forks if you like the chunks or use a ‘potato masher’ for a creamer consistency, and we recommend adding Gerbs Rosemary Garlic Seasoning Mix.

Gerbs Pumpkin Soup Ingredients & Directions Gerbs Rosemary Garlic Seasoning Mix

Find yourself a high quality large non-stick saucepan (with lid), this will be your best friend for years to come. In this large pan, over medium add olive oil, shallot and garlic. Cook until slightly browned and translucent, 4-6 minutes.

Add remaining ingredients, including the pumpkin, and bring to a simmer.

Blend soup with an immersion blender to puree the soup. If you want use a a blender, place a towel over the top of the lid before mixing to avoid any accidents. Pour mixture back into pot.

Continue cooking over medium-low heat for 5-10 minutes and taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Serve as is top with freshly roasted Gerbs Unsalted Pumpkin Seeds.

Gerbs Authentic Chicken Parmesan & Traditional Marinara Sauce

Gerbs Authentic Chicken Parmesan & Traditional Marinara Sauce

Gerbs Authentic Chicken Parmesan & Traditional Marinara Sauce

WHAT IS CHICKEN PARMESAN?

Chicken Parmesan is also known as chicken parmigiana. It’s a popular Italian-American chicken dish that is served in many popular restaurants such as Olive Garden, Cheesecake Factory, and most other popular food chains serve this easy yet delicious dish.

Chicken Parmesan consists of a breaded crispy chicken breast that’s topped with a marinara sauce, Provolone and/or Mozzarella cheese. The chicken is pan-fried until crispy on the outside and insanely juicy on the inside.

Chicken Parmesan is such a classic and one of those Italian dishes that everyone loves. The chicken is perfectly golden and crispy on the outside, but still juicy on the inside, topped with marinara sauce and lots of cheese.

This chicken is worth every single minute it takes to make! It’s one of the most loved and most ordered Italian dishes for a reason. Chicken parm has gone from being a beloved and once-a-year comfort food to an institutionalized, mass-produced staple. While there are hundreds if not thousands of recipes out there, here’s my favorite. It’s easy, simple and a classic!

WHAT IS CHICKEN PARMESAN

HISTORY OF CHICKEN PARMESAN:

The origin of the Mellenzana all Parmigiana is also debatable. According to some, it originated in the northern Italian city of Parma – hence the name, which means “In the style of Parma.” Others say the dish came out of southern Italy where eggplant is grown widely. Most early Italian immigrants also came from southern Italy, so it would make sense that they brought the recipe over with them. Today, Chicken Parmigiana often has its name simplified to Chicken Parmesan – referring to the delicate cheese made in and around the province of Parma. Interestingly, “Parmesan” is actually the French simplification of Parmigiana. The cheese became popular among the French nobility in the 1500s. It’s uncertain if the French had an influence on the eventual American classic, but it is clear that Chicken Parmigiana is truly a global dish.

HISTORY OF CHICKEN PARMESAN

Chicken Parmesan Ingredients:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, pounded thin
  • Gerbs Sea Salt, freshly ground black pepper, red pepper flakes

  • 1-pound fresh mozzarella, thinly sliced

  • 1 tsp. Gerbs red pepper flakes
  • Pinch brown sugar
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Slice chicken breast and pound chicken breast to ¼ – ½”. Season chicken on both sides with salt and pepper. Dredge each breast in Gerbs white rice flour and tap off excess, then dip in the egg wash and let excess drip off, then dredge on both sides in the bread Gerbs Italian breadcrumbs.

Chicken Parmesan Ingredients

Divide the oil between 2 large sauté pans and heat over high heat until almost smoking. Add 2 chicken breasts to each pan and cook until golden brown on both sides, about 2 minutes per side. Transfer to a baking sheet and top each breast with Marinara Sauce, a few slices of mozzarella, salt and pepper, and a tablespoon of Parmesan. Bake in the oven until the chicken is cooked through and the cheese is melted, about 5 to 7 minutes. Remove from the oven and garnish with fresh basil leaves.

Chicken Breasts Marinara Sauce

Marinara Sauce:

Heat olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add onions and garlic and cook until soft. Add plum tomatoes with their juices, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, 1 cup water, Gerbs bay leaf, Gerbs Italian seasoning, parsley, and sweet chili pepper, and bring to a boil. Top Gerbs Heart Healthy Foods in Recognition of American Heart Month

Top Gerbs Heart Healthy Foods
Top Gerbs Heart Healthy Foods in Recognition of American Heart Month

Believe it or not, heart disease can happen at any age. Some risk factors for heart disease and stroke are preventable. American Heart Month teaches us the ways we can help reduce our risks while eliminating those we have control over.  Do you have one of these risk factors for cardiovascular disease?  Obesity, physical inactivity, high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, high cholesterol or diabetes.

Heart disease accounts for nearly one-third of all deaths worldwide. Diet plays a major role in heart health and can impact your risk of heart disease. In fact, certain foods can influence blood pressure, triglycerides, cholesterol levels and inflammation, all of which are risk factors for heart disease.

Here is a list of Gerbs Allergy Friendly Foods products that you should be eating to maximize your heart health:

Gerbs Whole Grains

Teff, Amaranth, Buckwheat, Millet, Quinoa, & Sorghum

Whole grains include all three nutrient-rich parts of the grain: germ, endosperm and bran. Common types of whole grains include whole wheat, brown rice, oats, rye, barley, buckwheat and quinoa. Compared to refined grains, whole grains are higher in fiber, which may help reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol and decrease the risk of heart disease. Multiple studies have found that including more whole grains in your diet can benefit your heart health. One analysis of 45 studies concluded that eating three more servings of whole grains daily was associated with a 22% lower risk of heart disease. Similarly, another study found that eating at least three servings of whole grains significantly decreased systolic blood pressure by 6 mmHg, which is enough to reduce the risk of stroke by about 25%. When purchasing whole grains, make sure to read the ingredients label carefully. Phrases like “whole grain” or “whole wheat” indicate a whole-grain product, while words like “wheat flour” or “multigrain” may not.

Gerbs Whole Grains

Gerbs Berries

Strawberries, Goji Berries, Blueberries, Cherries, & Cranberries

Berries are also rich in antioxidants like anthocyanins, which protect against oxidative stress and inflammation that contribute to the development of heart disease. Studies show that eating lots of berries can reduce several risk factors for heart disease. For example, one study in 27 adults with metabolic syndrome showed that drinking a beverage made of freeze-dried strawberries for eight weeks decreased “bad” LDL cholesterol by 11%. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions associated with a higher risk of heart disease. Another study found that eating blueberries daily improved the function of cells that line the blood vessels, which help control blood pressure and blood clotting. Additionally, an analysis of 22 studies showed that eating berries was associated with reductions in “bad” LDL cholesterol, systolic blood pressure, body mass index and certain markers of inflammation. Berries can be a satisfying snack or a delicious low-calorie dessert. Try adding a few different types to your diet to take advantage of their unique health benefits.

Gerbs Berries

Gerbs Dark Chocolate

Three sizes of Dark Chocolate Chips, Cacoa Nibs, Cocoa Powders, Dark Chocolate covered Nibs

Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants like flavonoids, which can help boost heart health. Interestingly, several studies have associated eating chocolate with a lower risk of heart disease. One large study showed that those who ate chocolate at least five times per week had a 57% lower risk of coronary heart disease than non-chocolate eaters. Another study found that eating chocolate at least twice per week was associated with a 32% lower risk of having calcified plaque in the arteries.

Gerbs Dark Chocolate

Gerbs Sun-Dried Tomatoes

Tomatoes are loaded with lycopene, a natural plant pigment with powerful antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help neutralize harmful free radicals, preventing oxidative damage and inflammation, both of which can contribute to heart disease. Low blood levels of lycopene are linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. One review of 25 studies showed that a high intake of foods rich in lycopene was associated with a reduced risk of heart disease and stroke. Another study in 50 overweight women found that eating two raw tomatoes four times per week increased levels of “good” HDL cholesterol. Higher levels of HDL cholesterol can help remove excess cholesterol and plaque from the arteries to keep your heart healthy and protect against heart disease and stroke.

Gerbs Flax, Hemp & Chia Seeds

Chia seeds, Flax Seeds and Hemp Seeds are all great sources of heart-healthy nutrients, including fiber and omega-3 fatty acids. Numerous studies have found that adding these types of seeds to your diet can improve many heart disease risk factors, including inflammation, blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides. For example, hemp seeds are high in arginine, an amino acid that has been associated with reduced blood levels of certain inflammatory markers. Furthermore, flax seed may help keep blood pressure and cholesterol levels under control. One study in people with high blood pressure showed that eating 30 grams of flax seeds every day for half a year decreased systolic blood pressure by an average of 10 mmHg and reduced diastolic blood pressure by 7 mmHg. In one study of 17 people, eating bread made with flaxseed was shown to reduce total cholesterol by 7% and “bad” LDL cholesterol by 9%.

Traditional Rolled Oats, Instant Oats, Oat Groats

A warm bowl of oatmeal fills you up for hours, fights snack attacks, and helps keep blood sugar levels stable over time — making it useful for people with diabetes, too. Oats’ fiber can help your heart by lowering bad cholesterol (LDL). Best results come from using steel cut or slow-cooked oats.

Gerbs Hemp Seeds are a Top Nutritional & Health Superfood

February 3, 2020 by Sennen Conte Leave a Comment

Nutritional Benefits of Hemp Seedsnutritional benefits of hemp seeds

Nutritional benefits of hemp seeds

Many people consider hemp seeds to be a superfood. The seeds have a rich nutritional profile and provide a range of health benefits. Although hemp seeds come from the Cannabis sativa plant, they do not have any THC tetrahydrocannabinol, the chemical responsible for marijuana’s psychological effects. These small, brown seeds are rich in protein, fiber, and healthful fatty acids, including omega-3s and omega-6s. They have antioxidant effects and may reduce symptoms of numerous ailments, improving the health of the heart, skin, and joints.

PROTEIN-PACKED

Gerbs Hemp Seed Kernels contain almost as much protein as Gerbs Pumpkin Seeds. In every 30 grams (g) of seeds, or about 3 tablespoons, there are 9.46 g of protein. These seeds are a complete source of protein, meaning that they provide all nine essential amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks for all proteins. The body cannot produce nine of these acids, so a person must absorb them through the diet. Relatively few plant-based foods are complete sources of protein, making hemp seeds a valuable addition to a vegetarian or vegan diet. Hemp seeds are especially rich in an amino acid called arginine, which has benefits for heart health.

UNSATURATED FATS

The health benefits of polyunsaturated fats, especially omega-3 fatty acids, are becoming increasingly well known. Gerbs Hemp Seeds are a great source of essential fatty acids, such as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is an omega-3. The body cannot produce essential fatty acids, and the body must absorb them from the diet. They are crucial for long-term health.

The ratio of omega-3s to omega-6s is also important: In general, people tend to eat too many omega-6s and too few omega-3s, but adding Gerbs hemp seeds to the diet may help to promote a balance. According to results of a 2015 animal study, incorporating hemp seeds and hemp seed oil to hens’ diet led to eggs with increased levels of omega-3s in the yolks and a more healthful omega-3 to omega-6 ratio. Also, hemp seeds are low in saturated fats and contain no trans fats.

Nutritional benefits of hemp seeds

FIBER

Much of the fiber in a hemp seed lies in its outer hull, or shell. Gerbs offers Whole Hemp Seeds Unsalted hemp with the hulls intact. However, even without the shells, hemp seeds are a good source pf fiber, with three tablespoons containing approximately 1.2 g of fiber.

Consuming enough fiber every day can:

  • reduce the appetite
  • help with weight management
  • work to stabilize blood sugar levels
  • promote the health of the gut

VITAMINS & MINERALS

Gerbs Hemp seeds contain an impressive array of vitamins and minerals and are especially rich in:

  • vitamin E
  • magnesium
  • phosphorous
  • potassium

They are also a good source of iron, zinc, and B vitamins, including:

  • niacin
  • riboflavin
  • thiamine
  • vitamin B-6
  • folate

HEALTH BENEFITS >>PROTECT THE BRAIN

A study published in the journal Food Chemistry found that hemp seed extract has antioxidant effects in lab tests. These effects may result from the seeds’ cannabidiol (CBD) content. Results of a review from 2018 suggest that CBD and other compounds in the seeds may have neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, effects and may also help to regulate the immune system.

The review suggests that, because of these potential properties, CBD may help with neurological conditions, including:

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • multiple sclerosis
  • neuropathic pain
  • childhood seizure disorders

BOOST HEART HEALTH

The medical community believes that omega-3 fatty acids improve the health of the heart and reduce the risk of issues such as arrhythmias and heart disease. Gerbs Hemp Seeds contain high levels of omega-3s and a healthful ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids. The seeds also contain high levels of arginine, an amino acid that turns into nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is essential for artery and vein dilation, and it helps keep blood vessel walls smooth and elastic. Lowering blood pressure, eating a healthful diet, and participating in varied forms of exercise may help to decrease the risk of heart failure.

REDUCE INFLAMMATION

The amount of omega-3s in hemp seeds and the seeds’ healthful omega-3 to omega-6 ratio can together help to reduce inflammation. In addition, hemp seeds are a rich source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a polyunsaturated fatty acid that may also have anti-inflammatory effects. Some studies on animals suggest that GLA can act as a potent anti-inflammatory. However, recent studies in humans suggest that the acid is not always effective.

A review in The European Journal of Pharmacology states that humans process GLA in a very complicated way, which may explain why the studies in humans produce more varied results than those on animals. When looking at these studies, it is important to note that researchers usually use high concentrations of hemp seed extracts and that eating the seeds may produce less dramatic effects.

Reducing inflammation may help manage the symptoms of chronic diseases, such as:

  • metabolic syndrome
  • type 2 diabetes
  • arthritis
  • heart disease
  • non-alcohol-related fatty liver disease

IMPROVE SKIN CONDITIONS

Atopic dermatitis (AD) and acne can both result from chronic inflammation. The anti-inflammatory compounds in hemp seeds may help. Among other possible dietary causes, acne may be linked to a deficiency in omega-3s. The high omega-3 content in hemp seeds may help to manage and reduce acne symptoms. A 2018 review explored the effects of dietary changes on skin diseases. While the authors found evidence that eating more omega-3s may improve symptoms of acne, determining the extent of the effects will require more research. The authors also note that prebiotics and plant fibers may help to manage symptoms of AD. Hemp seeds are a rich source of plant fiber.

RELIEVE RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition. It causes the immune system to attack its own tissues, which leads to inflammation in the joints. In 2014, research conducted in human cells suggested that hemp seed oil could have anti-rheumatic effects. However, a 2018 review found a lack of conclusive evidence to suggest that cannabinoids could effectively treat rheumatic diseases. The authors noted that more research is needed.
